Basic Redstone circuitry is often used in building traps. Redstone wire acts as a power conductor. Power will travel through 15 blocks of wire. To increase the range, place Redstone repeaters in the circuit. To place Redstone wire, right-click on a block while holding Redstone dust.

Some blocks in Minecraft may be powered or unpowered. Power may be transmitted from a powered block to one or more of the six directly adjacent blocks. Similarly, Redstone wire that is placed on top of a block of dirt is part of the block above the dirt.
